In order to address the issue of horticulture waste such as dry leaves and plants from 700 parks and green belts, the Noida Authority plans mass treatment of about five tonnes of horticulture waste per day to turn them into organic manure and sell them at a nominal price to residents
“We have been witnessing a huge pile-up of leaves all across Noida. These leaves have become a problem to deal with. They even trigger fire at a few places. We will now turn these waste leaves into compost,” said Rajeev Tyagi, the general manager of the Noida Authority
For this, it has roped in experts in organic manure and has begun pilot projects by digging pits for compost in two places, including a Sector 8 nursery and along the Yamuna river front opposite Sector 15 A Park. A third location is being considered
Experts such as Colonel (rtd) Ram Rattan Singh Nara, a resident of Arun Vihar in Sector 28, Anurag Srivastava, a local expert in organic composting in Noida, Rahul Khera from a Gurgaon-based social enterprise — Balancing Bits, Kanika Kaushal from Ghaziabad and Kalpana Arora from IIT-Delhi have been roped for volunteering in the project
We have roped in these experts from across NCR and are working with them on multiple pilot projects to treat the horticulture waste naturally and turn them into organic manure to be sold at a nominal price,” said Tyagi
Three different composting techniques have been planned at these locations, which are eco-friendly aerobic way of composting, leaving minimum carbon footprints
Along the Yamuna river front, an improvised composting pit is being built with passive aeration. Four pits are being developed, where all pits will be used to process the horticulture waste getting generated from the park locally. This is a low-cost technique being developed by the Noida Authority itself under the voluntary guidance of experts,” said Tyagi
At the Sector 8 nursery, honey-comb structures will be created using bricks or concrete blocks. “This technique is being developed for the first time in Noida. Organic manure developed at Sector 8 nursery will be sold to public at a nominal cost to recover the operating cost which is very low,” added Tyagi, adding that with these efforts the Authority aims to tackle the persisting issue of leaf shedding and horticulture green waste in the city
